Review of: Enclave the Razorland Series by Ann Aguirre

WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

In Deuce's world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed 'brat' has trained into one of three groups-Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear--to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She's worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing's going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce's troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn't like following orders. At first she thinks he's crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don't always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she's never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce's perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy... but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.

My Review:

This is a post apocalyptic book which begins with an enclave living underground whose inhabitants have never seen the world above ground and where most people die before they reach their mid twenties.

Children are given a number at birth and don't receive a name until they have reached a certain age because most don't survive very long.
Each member is given a job in life, some are breeders chosen because they are believed to hold the ability to bare strong children. Some are builders and some are hunters whose job is to hunt for food and to protect the enclave.

Deuce is a female hunter and her partner is Fade a male who was not born to the enclave but was found as a feral boy who had survived on his own something almost unheard of.

While trying to protect her friend from being banished from the enclave she is banished herself and Fade along with her.

They travel to the top where she had been taught all her life no one and nothing survived, she was lied to. This is their journey to travel to the north where Fade's father before he died told him he could live where there was clean air, food and no monsters to deal with.

This was a really good book the first in the Razorland series. I will be looking forward to reading more. I give this one 4 and 1/2 croaks....

Review of : Blood Wyne by Yasmine Galenorn

The D'Artigo sisters have just turned in their badges to the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Now that they're free agents they're hoping things will be easier, but when you're half-human, half-Fae, things can go astray at the most inopportune times...especially if you're attempting to go undercover and penetrate the underworld of a vamp society on the brink of war.

My Review:

This book in the series focuses on Menolly D'Artigo half human half fae vampire, one of the three D'Artigo sisters.

Young human women are being raped, drained and killed by what seems to be a vampire serial killer and that spells big trouble for the supe community.

In trying to find and kill the murderer Menolly finds herself in league with the oldest vampire in town Roman who turns out to be the son of Blood Wyne the mother of all vampires. Menolly's relationship with Roman turns into more than she bargained for as she becomes his consort.

As Menolly tries to rid the city of the evil spirits controlling the Greenbelt Park District  of Seattle she is forced to seek the help of one of the Elder Fae known as the Maiden of Karask, Ivana Krask. In the end Menolly learns by making a deal with the Elder Fae she has opened up a whole new kettle of worms that may come back to bite her in the rear at a later date.

This was a good installment in the series full of action and if you like a lot of hot stuff you'll enjoy this one I give this book 4 croaks....

Review of: Treachery In Death by J.D. Robb

In the latest from the #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon, Eve Dallas tracks down those who break the law-including the ones sworn to uphold it.

Detective Eve Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are following up on a senseless crime-an elderly grocery owner killed by three stoned punks for nothing more than kicks and snacks. This is Peabody's first case as primary detective-good thing she learned from the master.

But Peabody soon stumbles upon a trickier situation. After a hard workout, she's all alone in the locker room when the gym door clatters open; and-while hiding inside a shower stall trying not to make a sound-she overhears two fellow officers, Garnet and Oberman, arguing. It doesn't take long to realize they're both crooked-guilty not just of corruption but of murder. Now Peabody, Eve, and Eve's husband, Roarke, are trying to get the hard evidence they need to bring the dirty cops down-knowing all the while that the two are willing to kill to keep their secret.

My Review:

Is there anything any dirtier than a corrupt cop? Eve Dallas doesn't think so and neither does any of her crew including that gorgeous gizillionaire Roarke aka Eve's husband....It gets a little hairy for a while but with her new detective Peabody and the usual crew they get the bad guy or in this case a very smart but devious female. You know how some women think they can blink those eyes and wave around an I am the daughter of and get by with murder not on Dallas's watch. I give this one 5 croaks as I love this series. If you haven't read these books I highly recommend them....

                                    Through The Veil
                                  By Brenda Sessoms

It had been four years now since Zeera returned from the veil. The only reason she returned was to save her mother from death.

She had been trained from a child to become a warrior of the archer clan. As her father's first born daughter it was her duty to serve her clan.

She had become the best warrior the clan had. At the age of seventeen , she was already a fierce and dedicated warrior.
She had acquired many horses and wealth from raids on warring tribes.

She was proud to be a warrior and very happy that she would not be obligated to wed as she never wanted to  be ruled by a man as her mother was.

Her father was the leader of the entire Ulay kingdom. His people adored him but his family suffered under his rule.He was so cruel to Zeera's brother Salede, the boy ran away.

Zeera was called before her father and ordered to catch her brother dead or alive.

Zeera tracked her brother for days and found where he had crossed the veil.

The veil separated their world from a small world known as Earth. Very few knew of the opening into the other world beside Zeera and her brother.

Zeera had only crossed over twice and had not stayed long as it was so different from her world as to be frightening.

She came out in the same place she always arrived, she stowed her weapons and donned clothing she had stolen the last time she crossed over.

She set out to find her brother and she knew it might be hard since the village they called New York was large and crowded with many loud machines, tall towers and loud people.

She wandered for weeks, sleeping in alleys, stealing food and whatever she felt she needed. On the third week she spotted him. He had his braids pulled back and was rubbing some sort of cloth over one of the machines these people are conveyed in.

She called his name and he looked up in shock and fear to hear his name spoken. When he saw his sister his face lit with joy.

He explained he was doing a job to make money which was what a person needed to survive in this jungle of New York.
He told her of Jake who had befriended him and was teaching him the ways of earth.

When his shift ended Salede led Zeera to the rooms he shared with Jake. They spoke of home and their parents, Salede refused to return to their home and Zeera could not blame him.

When Jake came home, he welcomed her as if he had known her all her life.

Days tuned into weeks and weeks to months, they learned the ways of these people and Jake learned of their ways.

Before Zeera realized it a year had passed and somewhere along the way she and Jake had fallen in love.

Zeera never saw herself with a man but Jake was so different.

With him everything was equal, everything shared. Jake was so surprised to find Zeera had never been intimate with a man. Jake was also surprised to find out how quickly a warrior learned.

Life was very good for all three of them. They had moved to a bigger apartment and by working hard and pooling their money they were living a good life.

Salede had found someone to love and was planning to marry, Zeera and Jake were expecting their first child in just a few days.

Zeera was home on leave from her job , when she heard a knock on the door. She opened the door and there stood Faga. Faga was a fellow warrior sent by her father demanding she return or he would kill their mother.

Zeera  gave birth to a beautiful little girl with curly red hair and called her Rabi after her mother.

She told Jake she had no choice but to return as her mother had always sheltered them from her father's wrath . She told Jake and Salede to care for their little one and she would return as soon as possible with their mother.

Her father's fury had no bounds as he had her brutally beaten for not forcing her brother home. Zeera vowed to take her mother away if she had to kill her father to do it.

The next day Zeera's cell door was opened and her mother stepped in and embraced her. Rabi told her of her father's demise. No one knew what happened, they found him with his throat slit when his concubine went in to dress him that morning.

Zeera stands atop the tallest mountain in her world looking for the last time as she waits for her mother to join her in their journey into the veil.....

Review of: Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole

HE VOWED HE'D COME FOR HER . . .

Murdered before he could wed Regin the Radiant, warlord Aidan the Fierce seeks his beloved through eternity, reborn again and again into new identities, yet with no memory of his past lives.

SHE AWAITS HIS RETURN . . .

When Regin encounters Declan Chase, a brutal Celtic soldier, she recognizes her proud warlord reincarnated. But Declan takes her captive, intending retribution against all immortals - unaware that he belongs to their world.

TO SATE A DESIRE MORE POWERFUL THAN DEATH . . .

Yet every reincarnation comes with a price, for Aidan is doomed to die when he remembers his past. To save herself from Declan's torments, will Regin rekindle memories of the passion they once shared - even if it means once again losing the only man she could ever love?

My Review:

Talk about carrying a torch for someone, this is the ultimate love story.... Regin is a valkyrie an immortal, daughter of  Wo'den.

Aidan the Fierce claims Regin as his mate when he meets her as a mere girl, nine years later he takes her only to loose his life . Upon his death he vows to return to her. He returns many times as someone else only to loose his life each time he claims her.

His last reincarnation is Declan Chase a mortal whose quest is to capture , torture and kill paranormal beings.

He captures  Regin  and  imprisons her not realizing the strange feelings he harbors for her is from his past.

He goes against everything he has been taught to rescue her and in the process discovers his past with her..... I like the book , although it has a little to much of the torch song trilogy for my taste  but I give it 3 croaks....

Review Of: This Side Of The Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Danger waits on both sides of the grave. . .

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance.

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous ''ally''--the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war--to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

My Review:

Cat and Bones are at it again and this time Cat is forced to drink blood from no other than the Mambo Queen herself the infamous Marie Laveau... Cat takes on Marie's powers of calling the dead and boy does it get hairy....
Along with Mencheres, Vlad himself and the whole familiar crew they face the challenge gallantly. However it amazes me that while ghouls are pursuing they still find time to pause for the horizontal mambo. don't get me wrong it wasn't so long ago I was trying out the Kama Sutra especially that one on page.....ooops TMI...Give me a break not while ghouls are on your tail. Survival 101 keep all body parts inside your clothing when being pursued by ghouls, they don't just nibble... they consume people.....I think I will give this one 3 croaks...

3. At Grave's End (2009)

The Red

By Brenda Sessoms

She was called by many names through the ages, but when my grandfather spoke of her with fear and awe, he called her the Red. She was a fearless warrior who fought beside the Huns in Constantine's army in the Byzantine empire. She stands almost seven foot , rippling muscles, long red hair ,glowing green eyes ,with a look so fierce it alone could kill you. She rides upon a war horse she calls Demon brandishing two long curved swords that have been magically enhanced.

Legend says she captured a djinn when fighting against the Ottoman empire and agreed to set the djinn free if upon her death she would become immortal enabling her to continue to fight .

She was defeated while defending Constantinople against the invasion of Suleyman.

The djinn kept his promise and she returned to fight again.

I had heard these stories since I was a boy and considered them only legends but I would soon learn they are real.

The Ottoman empire is now threatening our lands .We are securing our borders and sending our women and children to safety in the mountains. There is little doubt that we will be defeated but we will die trying to defend our homes.

We hear the sounds of their trumpets and horses as they approach. They have only sent a small army knowing there will be little need for more against our small empire. We brace for attack when suddenly a mist surrounds us and in the middle of the mist sits a female warrior with long red hair sitting abreast a black war horse.

I rub my eyes and she is still there. She shouts follow me, for this day every Ottoman will be defeated. We throw open the gates and follow her . She swings those swords so fast all you can see is blood as it sprays everywhere.

When the battle is over not an Ottoman is left standing. The warrior is no where to be found but we survived. As we carry our wounded back into our walls men begin to question each other as to what happened. I simply said," I don't know why she came, but I would follow her to hell and back ". A voice behind me said,"Is that so?"

That is the last thing I remember until I woke up in hell and the Red said,"Lets go fight some demons.".....

The End

Word Count:399

B.

My Notes:

Although it is a fact that the Huns were defeated by the Byzantine Empire and the remaining Huns chose to fight with them as mercenaries against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans did conquer Constantinople and Sulyman was the caliph of the Ottomans, other than that this is purely a work of fiction....

Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop

I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Books Complete Me are hosting the Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop.

Hello and welcome to my blog.  This is my first time participating in a Blog Hop and I am very excited.

Here is what I have up for grabs for one lucky commenter.

In keeping with the Leprechaun theme I have Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich.

Book Blurb:

Looking to get lucky?

Stephanie Plum is back between-the-numbers and she's looking to get lucky in an Atlantic City hotel room, in a Winnebago, and with a brown-eyed stud who has stolen her heart.

Stephanie Plum has a way of attracting danger, lunatics, oddballs, bad luck . . . and mystery men. And no one is more mysterious than the unmentionable Diesel. He's back and hot on the trail of a little man in green pants who's lost a giant bag of money. Problem is, the money isn't exactly lost. Stephanie's Grandma Mazur has found it, and like any good Jersey senior citizen, she's hightailed it in a Winnebago to Atlantic City and hit the slots. With Lula and Connie in tow, Stephanie attempts to bring Grandma home, but the luck of the Irish is rubbing off on everyone: Lula's found a job modeling plus-size lingerie. Connie's found a guy. Diesel's found Stephanie. And Stephanie has found herself in over her head with a caper involving thrice-stolen money, a racehorse, a car chase, and a bad case of hives.

Plum Lucky is an all-you-can-eat buffet of thrills, chills, shrimp cocktail, plus-size underwear, and scorching hot men. It's a between-the-numbers treat no Evanovich fan will want to miss!

I also have a copy of To Have and To Kill by Mary Jane Clark.

Book Blurb:

Piper Donovan never imagined that decorating wedding cakes could be so dangerous! A struggling actress with no immediate prospects and a recently broken engagement, Piper moves back in with her parents to take stock of her life. She steps tentatively into the family bakery business and finds herself agreeing to create a wedding cake for the acclaimed star of a daytime television drama. But soon someone close to the bride-to-be is horribly murdered and it seems that that someone is ruthlessly determined to stop the wedding.

With the help of her former neighbor, Jack, a handsome FBI agent with a soft spot for the gorgeous cake-maker, Piper moves closer to the truth. And as she narrows in on a suspect, she realizes that it's hotter in the kitchen than she may be able to handle. . . .

My giveaway is open to all followers of this blog with a US mailing address.  Just leave a comment with an email address and you are entered to win both books.  Good Luck!

                  Lost In Time

            By Brenda Sessoms

For two hundred years she has walked the moors of Ireland, weeping and wailing, a specter in white, ethereal in her beauty, a lost soul.

She returns each year upon the date of  her death to the place of her burial , a place so old very few ever visit. Shrouded in mist, headstones crumbling, she raises her hands and prays to the gods to release her from her wandering. As all the times before they ignore her.

If she could take it all back she would. She was the spoiled daughter of  a very rich man and wanted for nothing. She was on her way to a ball ,when her carriage suddenly came to a stop.  She called out to her driver furious that he had stopped.

He told his mistress he stopped for a wagon broken down in the middle of the road, she shouted for him to find a way around immediately.

A few moments passed by and there was a knock on her carriage door. She raised the window . When she looked out an old gypsy woman looked back at her .The old woman began to tell her of her grandson who was very sick and begged her to take him into town to see the doctor. The woman laughed at her and refused saying, " I will not let a filthy gypsy into my carriage" and slammed the window.

She shouted to her driver once more and they sped away. As they went around the old gypsy said, " If my grandson dies, you will upon your death wander these moors never finding peace for eternity".

The beautiful  boy, her only grandson took his last breath as the new day was dawning. Her grief over her loss soon took her from this earth also, but with her dying breath she repeated her curse.

The girl for she was only seventeen began to dream of the gypsy woman, over and over she heard the gypsy woman's words to her. She became even more cruel to those around her for she was frightened.

Three months after that fateful night she took her horse out on the moors when suddenly her horse became frightened and bolted throwing her and killing her........

Review Of I Am Number Four : By Pittacus Lore

Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books - but we are real.

Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.

I am Number Four.

I am next.

My Review:

His name is John smith before that he was Daniel and he will have many more names after this.He is on the run and has been since landing on Earth at the age of three. He is an alien from the planet Lorien, similar to earth, which was destroyed by an evil race known as the Mogadorians.

Nine children and their keepers escaped the day their planet was destroyed They are the only hope of returning and rebuilding their planet one day.Three have been found and killed, John is number four.

They move to a small rural town called Paradise Ohio, but Henri , John's keeper who is more like a father to him, reminds him he must always be ready to leave at a moments notice.
John finally makes a friend and falls in love with a beautiful girl.Events unfold which John has no control over, he comes in to some of his powers, number six finds them, the Mogadorians show up and all hell breaks loose.....

I highly recommend this book, it is very well written and although some may consider it more a YA book,I feel it is a book which will be enjoyed by all ages....I give this one 4 croaks...

Review of Cross Your Heart : By Michele Bardsley

Even vampires can be afraid of ghosts...

After the death of her husband-and her dreams of motherhood-Elizabeth Bretton returned to the family estate in Broken Heart, Oklahoma. Little did she know she would also give up her life as the Silverstone heiress.

But escaping the past isn't that easy-especially with a vengeful ghost trying to kill her, a 150-year-old mystery to solve, and an outrageously hot were-jaguar named "Tez" trying to get into her boudoir...

My Review:

This is the seventh installment in the Broken Heart Oklahoma Series. Once again we visit Broken Heart a town inhabited mostly by parankind and protected by the consortium, an organization of vampires who want to better the world and eventually have humans and parakind existing side by side.

Elizabeth Silverstone whose granfather founded the town and who is a vampire herself is attacked by a spirit or demon. She is rescued by a were jaguar who makes her libido go crazy and since vampires can not have sex without binding themselves to that person  for a thousand years  she is in a fine  pickle....hello...

This jaguar is  a stranger who turns out to be one of  the local were community's choice for a new alpha , which ticks off a few female weres when they find he prefers Elisabeth.

The entity manages to spread a type of curse to the local vampire queen and several other parakind as they try to find  a way to vanquish it.

This is another one of those stories where the hero and heroine have to dig into the past and find which ancestor did what that winds up causing havoc in the present day.

I can only go 3 croaks on this one.....

If you are interested these are the books in the Broken Heart, Oklahoma series:
