Gateway To The Land Of Hialea

                                     By Brenda Sessoms

I awoke to the sounds of Granny banging dishes and saying,
"wake up child today is your special day".

I stretched and listened to the sounds of the birds as they called to each other in the meadow. Today was my birthday and I was no longer a child but a sixteen year old woman and today I would receive my birth right. Today I would go to the sacred forest and if the sacred gateway spoke to me I would receive my abilities as a dragon . I would be one of the elite who could soar above the world, breathe fire and have unimaginable strength.

No one believed I would receive the gift because my mother was a human. My father however was one of the oldest and strongest living dragons on earth and he loved my mother until her death at my birth. Since that day he has lived in seclusion letting my grandmother raise me.

I loved my Granny with all my heart but it had been a hard life not having a mother and abandoned by my father. I learned to be hard and I learned to fight and I was sure the Gods would not abandon me.

I was so excited I could barely dress. I was not in the least hungry but Granny insisted I eat so I did. I wanted to look my best and I swore no matter what happened no one would see me cry.

Finally the time arrived and we all gathered in the sacred forest, there were twelve of us who would approach the gateway today . I was the twelfth.

Finally my time came, seven had heard the music four had not . As I approached I felt  a shiver run down my body then I began to hear a sound and I held my breath as the gateway began to glow and then I heard a symphony and a voice said" this is the one we have waited for  she will be a leader and the mother of many great warrior dragons to carry on her father"s line."

As I turned to look at my Granny standing beside her was a huge man  with long silver hair dressed in black and he had tears running down his cheeks. As I approached he called me by a name I had never heard before and I realized it was in the ancient language of the dragons. He was my father and he had just given me my dragon name. I looked at him with wonder as I had never seen him before and he told me I was as beautiful as my mother and then he walked away.

Life was to hectic from then on for me to worry about my father, after all I had done without his help so far and I didn't need it now.

Training was unbelievable and I was so tired every evening all I could do was eat and fall in bed get up and start again.

Finally  after a year of training we were given our jobs and I had the night watch, which I loved for I loved soaring through the night skies.

One night about three months later I was soaring over the mountains when I noticed a strange dragon coming on my right. He was glorious and so large. As he approached I told him to halt and state his name. It turned out to be my father who said he had been watching me every night and thought it was time we got to know each other. I asked why after all this time he wanted to be a part of my life. He informed me he had always been a part of my life but stayed in the background so I would learn to make it on my own or I would never be accepted as an equal.

We have been spending a lot of time together. I have learned a great deal about my mother. I may not feel a great deal of love for him now but who knows what the future may hold....

Hi B!

I love this one told from the harsh perspective of the abandoned sixteen year old. And dragons to boot! Love dragons!
